Custo Dalmau: Biography, Career and Achievements

Early life and background

Custo Dalmau, born Ángel Custodio Dalmau Salmons, is a Spanish fashion designer and the founder and creative force behind Custo Barcelona. He was born in Tremp, Catalonia, in 1959 and grew up in Barcelona. Before entering fashion, Dalmau studied architecture and developed an early interest in graphic design and visual culture.

His professional direction changed after a motorcycle journey through the United States with his brother David in the early 1980s. The brothers encountered the visual language of Californian surfing culture, including brightly printed T-shirts and a more informal approach to clothing, which subsequently became an important source of inspiration for their work.

Dalmau later described the original concept as closer to graphic design than conventional fashion. “More than fashion, our idea was oriented towards graphic design, but with the difference that the support was a T-shirt instead of paper,” he explained in an interview published by El Tiempo.

From printed T-shirts to Custo Barcelona

Custo and David Dalmau began developing their first T-shirt business in Barcelona at the beginning of the 1980s. The company's official history dates the foundation of the brand to 1980, while Spanish government material identifies March 1996 as the foundation of Custo Barcelona in its internationally recognizable form.

The first designs drew heavily on the brothers' experiences in California and their interest in graphic imagery. Their early T-shirts used colourful prints, tropical and surfing references, and combinations that were unusual in the European market of the period. According to Dalmau, finding manufacturers willing to produce the designs was initially difficult because printed T-shirts of this type were not yet common in Spain. By the mid-1980s, the graphics had become increasingly abstract and sophisticated.

The company initially concentrated on menswear. In 1986, Custo introduced its first women's collection, an important expansion that allowed the designers to work with a broader range of silhouettes, colours and combinations. By the end of the decade, the collections were being distributed throughout Spain, moving beyond the original T-shirt concept into dresses, jackets, trousers and other garments.

International breakthrough

The decisive stage in Custo Barcelona's international development came through the United States. The brothers initially promoted their collections directly to retailers, travelling with samples and approaching boutiques. Their products encountered rejection in some markets, but Los Angeles proved considerably more receptive to the colourful, graphic aesthetic. By the late 1990s, the label had developed a substantial American following.

Custo Barcelona was invited to New York Fashion Week in 1997. The appearance marked the beginning of a long association with the New York fashion calendar. Vogue España reported that the brand's first New York presentation as an invited label was followed by continued participation in the event, while Custo Barcelona's own history likewise dates its New York Fashion Week presence to 1997.

The American fashion and entertainment industries played an important role in the brand's expansion. Custo garments appeared on television and in Hollywood, including on characters from Friends and Sex and the City. By 1999, the Los Angeles Times reported that the label was being sold in more than 40 countries and that annual sales were expected to reach $30 million. The newspaper described the distinctive printed tops as part of a rapidly expanding fashion phenomenon referred to as “Custo fever.”

Design identity and expansion

Custo Dalmau's design language is associated with the combination of vivid colour, graphic prints, contrasting textures and the juxtaposition of different materials. What began with printed T-shirts gradually developed into a complete fashion system. By the early 2000s, Custo Barcelona's collections included women's and men's clothing as well as accessories.

In 2001, El País reported that the company was selling approximately two million garments annually and that about 90 percent of its textile production was exported. The United States was identified by Dalmau as the company's principal market. At the time, production involved Spain, Italy, France and Thailand, while the company had thousands of points of sale internationally.

The brand's international visibility also extended beyond fashion retail. Custo designs became associated with television, cinema and celebrity styling, helping establish the colourful graphic aesthetic as one of the most recognizable Spanish fashion exports of the period. The company subsequently expanded through accessories and licensing into categories including eyewear and fragrance.

Beyond Fashion

Custo Barcelona gradually expanded beyond clothing into a broader lifestyle brand. The company developed or licensed products in several adjacent categories, including accessories, eyewear, watches and children's fashion. In 2011, the Dalmau brothers established a joint venture, Blue Bags, with José Jiménez and Pietro Cuevas to develop and distribute a dedicated Custo Accessories line. Contemporary industry reporting noted that perfumes, eyewear and watches were being developed through licensing agreements, while the children's line, Custo Growing, was managed within the company's own group.

Fragrance became one of the most significant extensions of the brand. In 2007, Custo Barcelona signed a worldwide licensing agreement with Barcelona-based Idesa Parfums for the creation, development and commercialization of its first fragrance line, with the international launch scheduled for autumn 2008. The project was explicitly presented as “a further step in the consolidation of the brand's universe.” In 2010, Idesa introduced Pure Custo Barcelona Man and Pure Custo Barcelona Woman, expanding the fragrance portfolio with separate men's and women's Eau de Toilette compositions. More recently, the brand's fragrance development has continued through a partnership with Spanish fragrance company Dream Labo, which identifies This Is Me and I Am the Power as products of this new stage of Custo Barcelona perfumery.

Awards and recognition

Dalmau's career has received recognition from both the fashion industry and Spanish institutions. In July 2003, he became the first Spanish designer to receive the Italian Kore award, known as the “Oscar of Italian Fashion.” The award, presented in Taormina, recognized his creativity.

Custo Barcelona was also named Best Spanish Designer at the 2003 Telva fashion awards.

In 2020, the Spanish Ministry of Industry awarded Custo Dalmau the Honorary Award for Fashion Designer as part of the National Fashion Industry Awards. The ministry described the award as recognition of the work of professionals and companies contributing to excellence in Spain's fashion sector. The award was formally presented on 22 October 2020 in Madrid in a ceremony presided over by Queen Letizia.

Legacy

Custo Dalmau's career is closely connected with the international development of Custo Barcelona. The company transformed the graphic T-shirt from a relatively simple casual garment into the central element of a broader fashion identity built around colour, pattern, experimentation and cultural references.

The New York runway became a particularly important part of that trajectory. In 2023, Dalmau said that very few designers had maintained an uninterrupted presence at New York Fashion Week for as long as Custo Barcelona, describing the label's long-running participation as a result of consistency.

Custo Barcelona continues to identify itself as a Barcelona-founded international fashion brand, tracing its origins to 1980 and its New York Fashion Week history to 1997. Its official profile currently states that the brand operates in more than 50 countries, preserving the combination of graphic experimentation, colour and independent design that defined Dalmau's work from its earliest years.
